Religion in Schools? 2 Months, 1 Week ago
Do you think there should be religion classes in schools? There have been incidences where students come wearing religious dress, or with a kirpan or some other religiously affiliated something that has caused a stir- whether because it is seen as a potential weapon, or the school system just has no place for religion and its expression.

Personally I think there should be education about all religions in school. It seems that these days the general thoughts are to ignore or even supress reliogion, calling it foolish and irrelevant. I think that religion in a very deeply rooted and personal thing that means a great deal to many people, and to simply shrug it off is a disjustice to those people. Also it is important to learn about different religions whether you are practicing or not, so that you may be socially aware and sensitive to others and their belifs.

What do you think?

We have scripture and religious education in our public school system. I'm a Christian , so yes,I lke that it's there. However when one lives is a country they should also abide by the laws and culture of that country. So I think even though there maybe religion taught at schools clothing, head gear, dress, whatever should reflect the code of the school. It should also reflects the society one lives in. So when in "Rome do as the Romas so to speak." or wear what the romans wear Learning about different cultures is always good in my book as long as there is the freedom by the parents and or students to choose

I think they should be banned !

I dont agree with them , never have never will.

If you kids wants to follow any religion , they should do of there own choice and not have it drilled into there heads.

My kids will be brought up with my religion , which is none !!

I think its bad too. The only decent school within 30k's of where I live is a Christian School, the curriculum is good but they have scripture class and religious undertones in every subject, as well as the cross on the school uniform even.

I think it stinks lol Who says one religion is the one that should be taught? One sole religion? Who decided that? Where was I when it happened?

I'm not religious at all either but I've studied Anton LaVey for example and it makes a lot of sense. I find it offensive even that Christian lies are forced upon children.

Its up to ME to teach my child, to educate them about their choices as to religion and let them decide what they believe to be true. Not some teacher. I don't see any Luciferian schools, Satanic schools, Hindu schools, schools for those monks who made that BLASTED 'Gregorian Chant' CD my mum used to play 24/7.

Only my opinion though lol Perhaps I should move before I need to make the decision about schooling.

I don't agree with the emphasis given to Religious studies by schools....I mean here we get the choice to send your children to Catholic, or CofE, and even other faith schools if you have one in your area, however, from an early age I disagreed with the teachings, I mean when I started Secondary school I refused to do RE on the grounds that I didn't beleive, it took a fight but I won and I never did RE throughout my school time...so you can refuse if you wish to protest...

The one thing I will say tough is I have noticed a change in the teaching curriculum when it comes to Regligous studies, in our schools now they do not only teach/preach about one faith they do discuss other religons and faiths and more importantly their history....

As I said I am not religious, but I am fascinated by the history of religion, the bible in particular and for anyone who is interested I think you would be amazed at what you would find, the why it was written, the when it was written and more importantly the who wrote it...and beleive me it's the kind of stuff that never gets into the classrooms...

But as a general rule I think each child should have the decision as to whether or not they want to attend RE class etc...

I am going to add another layer here. Don't you think that having no religion is still a belief system? Whether or not you officially belong to a group or organization, you still have taken a leap of faith to come to the conclusion of atheism, or agnostic, or whatever religious group you belong to. So.... no matter how much atheists deny it, they too believe in something! I agree that no child should have religion drilled into their head because this can become brain washing, but I will take my kids to church so they can learn about my beliefs and make their own choices.

I will happily expose them to numerous religious groups and practices if they are interested, part of which I think is teaching about these religions in schools. IT doesn't mean teaching the religions themselves, but rather about them, which I think will do justice to some students that are having a certain religion 'drilled into their heads' so to speak.

thoughts about this?
